General

Sharjah: The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) has introduced a groundbreaking Archaeological Geographic Information System during GITEX Global 2024, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. This initiative, part of the “Towards a Sustainable Digital Future” platform, is designed to enhance the preservation of cultural heritage in the Emirate of Sharjah through cutting-edge technology.

According to Emirates News Agency, the newly launched system is a testament to the Emirate of Sharjah’s commitment to safeguarding its rich cultural heritage, reflecting the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The system aims to position Sharjah as a leader in cultural heritage preservation on both regional and international stages.

Eisa Yousif, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, stated that the Archaeological Geographic Information System is a pivotal part of SAA’s innovative strategies to protect human heritage and deepen the unders
tanding of Sharjah’s historical and cultural dimensions. The system facilitates collaboration and knowledge exchange between cultural and infrastructural bodies and provides a robust platform for researchers and academics to access detailed information on archaeological sites.

The technology behind the system includes satellite precision, advanced laser devices, and drones that help in documenting and accurately pinpointing archaeological sites. It creates a comprehensive 3D database for each site, which improves the management and accessibility of this critical information.

Experts using this system can monitor archaeological sites continuously to prevent damage from human activities or natural occurrences. The system also features tools that allow for rapid interventions to protect sites from threats, and it helps mitigate the environmental impact on these sites from climate change or natural disasters.

By participating in GITEX Global 2024, the Sharjah Archaeology Authority showcases its dedication to i
ntegrating modern technology with archaeological conservation, and it opens the door for increased cooperation with global tech entities and partners in developing sustainable preservation solutions.
