Palestinian freedom fighter free after spending 35 years in Israeli prisons

General

The Israeli occupation authorities today released freedom fighter Bashir al-Khatib, 60, a Palestinian-Israeli, after serving 35 years in prison for resisting the Israeli occupation, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society. Khatib was detained in 1988 and sentenced to life in prison later commuted to 35 years. He is a father of five children and has eight grandchildren. Israel refused to include Khatib in any prisoner exchange deal. He was nevertheless supposed to be released in the fourth batch of old-serving prisoners in 2014 in a US-brokered deal before the Israeli government at the time reneged on its part of the deal and refused to release him along with the other prisoners in the same batch, most of them serving life terms and were from inside Israel or occupied East Jerusalem.
