Mikati and Italian PM Call for Diplomatic Solutions Amidst Rising Tensions in Lebanon

BEIRUT: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Grand Serail, emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions over armed conflict. The conference underscored the solidarity of Italy with Lebanon during challenging times, as Italy continues to support international peacekeeping efforts in southern Lebanon.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Mikati began by acknowledging the historical ties between Lebanon and Italy and the significance of their bilateral relations. Discussion points included the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon, with both leaders stressing the necessity for diplomacy to prevail over violence. Mikati highlighted the importance of Israel’s adherence to a ceasefire and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which demands respect for Lebanese sovereignty.

Mikati reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to international resolutions and expressed readiness to strengthen the Lebanese army’s presen
ce in the south, in collaboration with UNIFIL forces. He conveyed Lebanon’s appreciation for Italy’s contributions to UNIFIL, which underline Italy’s dedication to Lebanon’s stability and territorial integrity.

The caretaker prime minister also condemned threats to UNIFIL and emphasized the need for collective action against such violations. He thanked Italy for its continuous support in enhancing the Lebanese army’s capabilities and stressed the urgency of electing a new president to initiate economic reforms and recovery.

Concluding his remarks, Mikati urged Lebanese parties to learn from the high costs of external conflicts and to prioritize the sovereignty of the Lebanese state. He welcomed Meloni’s visit, expressing hope for Italy’s active role in halting aggression against Lebanon.
