Iraq and UN Plan for Gradual Termination of UNAMI Mission

General

BAGHDAD: Iraq and the United Nations are in discussions about the gradual termination of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The dialogue was highlighted during a meeting between Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Mohamed Al Hassan, the new Special Representative for Iraq and Head of UNAMI.

According to Emirates News Agency, Fuad Hussein conveyed Iraq’s readiness to provide all necessary support to facilitate the work of the UN Special Representative. He also extended his gratitude to UNAMI for its substantial support to Iraq throughout its operations.

The decision to conclude UNAMI’s mandate by the end of 2025 was taken by the UN Security Council in May, following a request from the Baghdad government. This step marks a significant transition for Iraq as it moves towards reclaiming full sovereignty and managing its internal affairs independently.
