Amman: His Royal Highness Prince Mired bin Raad, Chairperson of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), and Jordan’s Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to improve access for persons with disabilities to the nation’s justice facilities and legal services.

According to Jordan News Agency, the memorandum outlines plans to upgrade the infrastructure of the Ministry of Justice’s buildings to meet accessibility standards prescribed in the code of building requirements for persons with disabilities. This initiative begins with the renovation of the Salt Primary Court building and aims to enhance access to information through improvements to the Ministry’s official website and its electronic services platform.

The agreement also includes measures to incorporate accessibility into relevant policies, strategies, and programs, thus ensuring that persons with disabilities can fully exercise their right to litigation. Additionally, court staff
will undergo specialized training to improve communication with persons with disabilities.

The Council’s technical team will conduct sensory inspections of the Ministry’s facilities to assess their readiness to accommodate persons with disabilities and provide reports on necessary improvements. This effort aligns with the Council’s obligations under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Law No. 20 of 2017, which requires providing technical support to government institutions to ensure the inclusion of the rights of persons with disabilities in their plans and services.
