Arab League Secretary-General Calls for Ceasefire and UN Resolution in Lebanon

Beirut: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati hosted a significant meeting at the Grand Serail on Monday with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, discussing urgent regional issues and the current crisis in Lebanon.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the meeting also saw the participation of the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, and the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Judge Mahmoud Makieh. Post-discussion, Aboul Gheit publicly emphasized the Arab League’s staunch support for Lebanon, advocating for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. He underscored the critical need for adherence to UN Resolution 1701, suggesting that a new UN Security Council resolution might be necessary to enforce its immediate implementation comprehensively.

Aboul Gheit also highlighted the plight of the displaced Lebanese citizens, insisting on their right to return to their homes in the south free from Israeli inte
rference. He appealed to the international community for substantial and swift humanitarian assistance and conveyed his condolences for the extensive loss of life the conflict has caused.

Further addressing the media, Aboul Gheit mentioned the involvement of US envoy Amos Hochestein and acknowledged the positive engagement of Lebanese leaders with the proposed American strategies to resolve the crisis. He expressed optimism about gaining momentum towards alleviating Lebanon’s severe situation through international cooperation.
