Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship for Contributions to Chess

UFA: Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, the President of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), has been awarded the prestigious “Order of Friendship” by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The award was presented at the 12th International Sport Forum “Russia – Country of Sports” held in Ufa, Russia, in recognition of his significant contributions to the sport of chess across Asia and his efforts in promoting international cooperation through sports.

According to Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa expressed his deep gratitude for the honor, reflecting on the values of tolerance, friendship, and peace that chess promotes globally. He underscored the UAE’s commitment to utilizing sports as a medium for international dialogue, a vision strongly supported by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During his acceptance speech, Sheikh Sultan also highlighted the pivotal role played by the ACF under his leadership in transitioning the Russian Chess Federation from the Euro
pean Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation. This strategic move has not only strengthened chess ties between Asia and Russia but has also been instrumental in developing chess programs in schools across the continent.

Sheikh Sultan’s efforts in launching new initiatives and strategic plans aim to widen access to chess and enhance Asia’s global competitiveness in the sport. His leadership has been central in fostering a greater appreciation and participation in chess, contributing to the sport’s development and the fostering of international relationships.

The “Order of Friendship” is one of Russia’s highest honors given to foreign nationals, recognizing individuals who have made profound contributions to fostering better relationships and mutual understanding between nations.
