BEIRUT: In a significant political development, MP Samy Gemayel, leader of the Kataeb Party, has voiced his support for caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s recent actions addressing Iranian influence in Lebanon. Gemayel’s endorsement follows Mikati’s directive to summon the chargé d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, seeking clarification on statements made by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Mikati’s initiative was prompted by Ghalibaf’s remarks suggesting Tehran’s willingness to engage in discussions with France regarding the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This move by Mikati is seen as an effort to assert Lebanon’s sovereignty and reinforce its decision-making power amidst growing concerns over foreign interference.

Gemayel expressed his backing on the social media platform X, emphasizing the importance of limiting external influences in Lebanon’s internal matters. He highlighted the need for continued ac
tions to strengthen state authority across the nation, suggesting that Mikati’s directive is a step in the right direction.

The call to summon the Iranian diplomat reflects a broader political strategy aimed at regaining control over Lebanon’s foreign policy and ensuring that national interests remain at the forefront. This development has sparked discussions about Lebanon’s diplomatic relations and its stance on international resolutions, particularly those involving regional players.

The endorsement from Gemayel, a prominent political figure, signals a potential shift in the domestic political landscape as leaders rally to reinforce Lebanon’s sovereignty. The situation continues to evolve as the Lebanese government navigates the complexities of foreign diplomacy in a volatile regional context.
